Abstract:
This study aims at investigating the impact of vocabulary knowledge breadth on reading comprehension of EFL learners. Two language tests were adopted to collect the required data; vocabulary level test and a reading comprehension test. The sample of the study comprised 41 third-year students majoring in English language at University of Nyala. The study has come out with several results. There was positive correlation between vocabulary breadth and reading comprehension. Breadth of vocabulary knowledge proved to be of great impact on reading comprehension. Students with high proficiency level of vocabulary breadth were more successful in reading comprehension than those with less proficiency level of vocabulary breadth. These findings clearly prove the positive impact of vocabulary breadth on reading comprehension. On the bases of these results, the study forwarded some recommendations and suggestions for further studies
