Abstract:
The title of this study is “Using Authentic Document in French Teaching as
a Foreign Language”. It was conducted in the context of teaching French as
a foreign language in Sudan where authentic document is considered to be
one of the teaching aids which may effectively contribute to the process of
developing the student’s language abilities in listening, reading, writing and
speaking skills. An authentic document can also play a significant role in
providing students with new vocabulary if we properly select the type of
document that agrees with our Muslim community.
This study aimed at developing and improving the performance of French
Language students with regard to comprehension, composition and speaking.
The study also aimed at helping the students in understanding such type of
educational aids.
This study assumed three hypotheses as follows:
- As a teaching aid, an authentic document can play a significant role in
teaching French as a foreign language.
- An authentic document may provide the students with new vocabulary
which will in turn provide them the opportunity to build a good knowledge
of language and thus they may benefit from that in speaking and
composition.
- Performance of students may improve after using an authentic document as
a teaching aid.
In order to prove the hypotheses of the study, the researcher used the
descriptive analytic method after conducting two experiments with two
samples of students where we compared the results obtained from the two
experiments.
The researcher followed up the performance of the students in
comprehension and speaking after using an authentic document where we
observed the following:
- The performance of the students has clearly improved and that was evident
through their fast understanding to the parts showed of the authentic
document.
- Using an authentic document as an educational aid can develop the
teaching process of French language at Sudanese universities and schools.
- This type of educational aids when repeatedly used will provide a good
environment for the student to learn French language.
