Abstract:
This study was quantitative analytical cross sectional hospital base study , was carry out
to estimate serum lipid profile in Sudanese Children under 5 year with protein energy
malnutrition .(50) of children with protein energy malnutrition attmated Omdruman
Teaching Hospital and Gaffer Abn Awaf Hospital Specific for Children, the mean of
age (19±7.30) during period of March to May 2011 .
Three ml of blood samples were taken form each children with protein energy
malnutrition, and apparently health control children to measure lipid profile
(S.cholesterol ,S. triglyceride ,S.HDL-c ,S.LDL-c ), by enzymatic methods, (Biosystem
reagents) and using specophotometer (biosystem BT -305) .
Most of patients were Residence in urban and suburban Khartoum state 48.8% form urban
and 51.2 % suburb of Khartoum state. 64% of patients were boys and 36 % were girls. 58%
of children with protein energy malnutrition were prolong breast feeding without other
nutritional support.
There was significant decrease in means of weight in patients (6.48 + 1.78 Kg) when
compared with control group (15.30+5.89 Kg) , (p = 0.000).while the height means
showed insignificant in patients (70.22+10.74 cm) compared to control group
(74.03+15.74 cm) with p value =(.202 ) .The body surface area in children with protein
energy malnutrition was significant decrease ( 3.3 +.2832kg/cm2) compared with control
group ( 5.5+.6691kg/cm2 ) p value. 000. There were significant decrease in lipid profile
S.cholesterol(81.36+11.29mg/dL),s.triglyceride(61.5+13.46mg/dL),s.HDL-c
(26.06+5.40mg/dL)and s.LDL-c(75.92+5.40mg/dL) compared to control s.cholesterol
(138.90+16.63mg/dL), s.triglyceride (114.90+ 19.24mg/dL), s.HDL-c (46.33+7.33mg/dL)
and s.LDL-c (128.40+15.46mg/dL)with p.value (.001),(.038), (.000) and (.000)
respectively .There were insignificant varition
between the means of lipid profile according to different types of proteins energy
malnutrition .
