Abstract:
This study has aimed at evaluating secondary school pupils' standards in reading and writing as this study is conducted under the title of : Evaluation of Sudanese Secondary Schools Pupils’ Standards in Reading and Writing After the Application of SPINE Series..
To achieve this purpose, the researcher tries to investigate the problems facing secondary school pupils when attempting reading and writing. In addition , this study attempts to find out how secondary school pupils can be competent in reading and writing .
The study adopts a descriptive analytical method. The sample of the study consisted of third years secondary school pupils and secondary school English language teachers.
Two tools were used to collect data. I.e a test and a questionnaire whose validity and reliability were checked and specified . Then statistical operations such as arithmetic mean, standard deviation were utilized to analyze data collected.
The study revealed that pupils were incompetent in reading as the SPINE series haven't got sufficient vocabulary practices; the reading materials are overloaded with a heavy burden of new lexical items and due to inappropriate selection, grading and presentation of reading materials within SPINE series.
On the other hand, pupils were also found incompetent in writing due to a multitude of factors such as their poor linguistic competence , insufficient writing techniques and insufficient writing materials within SPINE series.
Consequently , in the light of these findings , the study has drawn some recommendations and suggestions for further studies.
