Abstract:
This study aimed to shed alight on the differences between British English and American English regarding
spelling and vocabulary and their impact on student performance in writing.
The study is also trying to detect the problems that might face students in higher education Sudan University of Science & Technology who deal with topics written by researchers who deal with the Americans or the Internet to gather information. Moreover, the computers are programmed according to the American English lexicons, which clearly reveal the difference in the vocabulary and, writing.
The theoretical framework for this study contains a summary of previous relevant studies and studies that take place in the centre of the subject as it also contains a definition of British English language and dialect of American English as well as it gives an idea about the history of English language and American English
the researcher uses a questionnaire to explore the depths of these differences of spelling, vocabulary. The questionnaires have been distributed to professors, doctors and teachers of Sudan University of Science and Technology, faculty of Education; in addition to graduate students.
The findings are supportive to the research hypotheses, which confirmed the presence of the differences between British English and American English regarding vocabulary and spelling. The study also included recommendations that the researcher finds it useful in revealing the solutions to this problem.
The study results showed that teachers of English Language have to be aware of difference between British and American English because learners need to know that, there are other varieties of English. In addition to that the common mistakes made by students in writing are in spelling.
