Abstract:
A cross-sectional study conducted during the period of December 2008 to
March 2009, compared the serum levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides,
HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol of 50 patients with chronic renal
failure (as a test group) and 30 apparently healthy volunteers (as a control
group). All patients and controls were from Ibn Sena Hospital, Kartoum,
Sudan.The test group and the control group was matched in terms of age and
gender. The serum levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol
and LDL-cholesterol were measured using Selectra E/vital lab from Linear
.Company, Spain
The data was analyzed and the results showed the top cause of chronic
renal failure in this study was diabetus mellitus (42%) and most of patients
.were in the age group 20-40 years
The serum levels of triglucerides and creatinine were significantly
increased in the test group compared to the control group (P<0.05), while the
serum levels of the total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol
were not significantly different in the test group compared to the control

In patients with chronic renal failure, the serum levels of triglycerides
and total cholesterol were positively correlated while the serum levels of
HDL-cholesterol were negatively with the duration of the disease and there
is no correlation between serum levels of LDL-cholesterol with the duration
of chronic renal failure and no correlation was found between the serum
.levels of creatinine and the serum levels of triglycerides or total cholesterol
From this study, it is concluded that, in Sudanese patients with chronic
renal failure, the serum levels of triglycerides are raised, but the serum levels
of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol are not affected.
The duration of the disease has a weak positive correlation with both the
serum levels of triglycerides and the serum levels of total cholesterol, and
has no correlation with the serum levels of LDL-cholesterol, but has a weak
negative correlation with the serum levels of HDL-cholesterol. The serum
level of creatinine has no correlation with neither total cholesterol nor
.triglycerides
