Abstract:
The aim of this work was to study in vitro antimicrobial activity of different concentrations of honey and petroleum ether extract of Nigella sativa against Escherichia coli isolated from infected urinary tract patients.
This is a descriptive cross sectional study carried out in Shendi city,Sudan, during the period from November to December 2019, at Microbiology Lab, Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, Shendi University.
One hundred urine samples were collected form infected urinary tract patients. Urine specimens were inoculated onto Cystine Lactose Electrolyte Deficiency (CLED) media and incubated aerobically at 37˚C for 18 hours . Out of 100 samples 61 (61%) showed bacterial growth, 39 (39%) showed no growth. Escherichia coli was isolated and identified using Gram’s stain and biochemical reactions.
Out of the 100 samples 32(32%) clinical isolate were confirmed as Escherichia coli. The antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed using Ciprofloxacin by standard disc diffusion method. Escherichia coli susceptibility showed high resistance to Ciprofloxacin 17(53.1%).And by using cup-plate agar diffusion method 92% of the isolate were sensitive to Nigella sativa extract were 84% sensitive to honey and 100% sensitive to the mixture of Nigella sativa and honey. It can be concluded that the addition of Nigella sativa to honey induced antibacterial synergistic effect against Escherichia coli.
