Abstract:
This work focuses Study of linear absorption and mass attenuation coefficient for radiation safety. Present study is intended to investigate the attenuation coefficient for the various materials of different thickness as absorbers for radioactive source and establish the relations among linear attenuation coefficient, mass attenuation coefficient. A Radioactive source 𝐶𝑠138 was used as sources of the gamma rays. Geiger Muller counter is used as detector. Iron, glass, plastic and wood materials are used as absorber. The results showed that the mass attenuation coefficient for Iron, glass, plastic and wood is 0.4583, 0.064, 0.0524, and 0.0178 respectively, and the linear absorption for them is 0.582, 0.02393, 0.05652, and 0.02677 respectively. This show the Iron is better absorber of materials were used in the study. The results also showed that the mass attenuation coefficient and linear absorption directly proportional to the distance between the source and the absorber.
