Abstract:
Head injuries continue to be enormous public health problem. Even with
modern medicine, most patient have mild stages ,the remaining injures are
divided equally between the moderate and severe.
The objective of this research was to study the role of computed tomography in
earliest and fastest diagnosis of head injuries, and to classify types of trauma
based on the main cause of the traumatic brain injuries (TBI) as well as type of
hemorrhage. The study was conducted in Khartoum state at Best Care hospital.
A sample of 70 patients,( 64% males and 36% females ) were grouped
according to age into 7 age groups were investigated using CT scanning to
diagnose head injuries.
The study showed that the most common cause of head trauma was Road traffic
accident (RTA) (69 %) and the most common CT finding was fracture (57.1%)
and the facial bone was most common type of fracture (25.7%) and of head
traumatic hemorrhage were subdural hemorrhage and epidural hemorrhage
(19%). and the most common age groups susceptible for head injuries were (20-
30) and (30-40).
Finally CT is seem to be the diagnostic tool of choice in the diagnosis of
traumatic head injuries compared with other imaging modalities because it is
time saving and has high accuracy in detection of fracture and consequence
hemorrhage. The study recommended that C.T scan machines should be
available in emergency hospitals.
