Abstract:
This was descriptive study done in Khartoum state Sudan in Bahri and Haj Elasafi Teaching Hospital, in addition to other health care centers, from July – to October 2018. The problem of study was that the prostate volume measurement is frequently used to diagnose the abnormalities of the gland and the normal size of the gland itself affected by age, weight, hormones etc. The main objective of the study was to measure prostate gland volume using ultrasound. 60 patients were randomly selected, their age ranged from 18 to 60 years; subjects with any symptoms related to prostate pathologies were excluded. Trans- abdominal ultrasound scanning by 3.5 MHz probes was performed, and the maximum length, width, and depth of the prostate diameters were obtained, as well as the prostate volumes. The data collected by data sheet specifically design for the study and including study variables then analyzed by Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS)
The results of the study revealed that the prostate transverse, AP and longitudinal diameters mean values were (3.66) cm, (2.83) cm, and (3.05) cm respectively, the mean prostate volume obtained from the above parameters was 16.85± 4.7ml. The study also showed that, there was an increase in the prostate volume in relation to increase in the patient's age and weight. Furthermore, the study found out that the prostate volume was affected by the marital status and normal prostate has mid-grey level echogenicity, and homogenous in texture.
The study concluded that prostate volume affected by age, weight and marital status; the study recommended that further studies should be done with larger sampling for more accurate results
