Abstract:
This research is an attempt to investigate the problems made by students in their writing performance. Students of third years in the Islamic Institute of Translation Department of Languages The samples chosen in the study were (26) students out of (33) who were enrolled in the Department of English Faculty of languages.
In order to carry out the study, one test was used as elicitation technique for data collection. The test has shown that students were unable to utilize punctuation marks satisfactorily and correctly.
The research suggested a number of recommendations among which are following:1- The teaching and learning of punctuation mechanic should be stress of the course books prior to university by giving punctuation rules and uses as far as possible.
2-punctuation marks should be recognized as control element in language teaching process from the beginning stage.
3- Teachers should give more emphasis to the teaching punctuation marks. Through giving students more practice in the uses of the punctuation marks.
The study consists of five chapters:
Chapter one is an introduction of the study.
Chapter tworeviews the literature of punctuation marks and related study.
The third chapter is methodology
Chapter four is devoted to analysis, discussion and interpretation.
The study ends with a summary of the findings of the study, the recommendations, and suggestions for further research. III
