Abstract:
This study aimed at examining learning vocabulary through listening to TV English news stories of the BBC World. The researcher used descriptive and analytical approach to investigate the issue. The thesis includes some questions and hypotheses. The tool used for obtaining data was two questionnaires set for two groups. The first group was 4th year students majoring in English at the College of Languages, Sudan University of Science and Technology for the academic year 2017. The second group was the teachers of the College of Languages and College of Education at the same university, while the program of using SPSS was used to compute and analyze these two sorts of questionnaires. The study concludes with some findings but these are the major ones:
1- The use of TV English news stories in learning vocabulary is effective but there are some obstacles which hinder the learning process. This is due to learners’ language level.
2- 4th Year College of Languages students of English use various vocabulary learning strategies when listening to the news.
3- Most of the students are aware of the English culture but some of them need some cultural lessons to strengthen their learning ability.
Based on these findings the researcher provided some recommendations to be followed by the learners, the teachers and curriculum designers. Suggestions for further studies have also been added for future research.
