Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of
Streptococcus pyogenes in throat swabs and serum
specimens among children patients with tonsillitis. A total
of 100 throat swab specimens collected from Khartoum
State in Khartoum Teaching hospital during April to June
2012. Bacteriological analysis of throat swabs were
performed
for
Streptococcus
pyogenes
including
inoculation on sheep blood agar and on crystal violet
blood agar. Susceptibility testing was carried out for each
isolate.100 specimens were collected from suspected
tonsillitis each specimen involved blood for serological
purpose and swab for culture purpose Out of the 100
throat swab specimens; 32 (32%) Streptococcus pyogenes
was recovered from patients with age ranging from 5
to15years. The 32 isolates were susceptible to Bacitracin,
Amoclane,
azithromycin,
penicillin,
ciprofloxacin,
gentamycin, ampicilline and erythromycin but they were
resistant
to
cotrimoxazole.
This
study
showed
that
Streptococcus pyogenes considered to be one of the
important
respiratory
tract
pathogens
in
children
particularly with an age ranging from 5 to15years old.
Since antibiotic therapy should be guided by in-vitro
susceptibility tests.
All serum samples examined ASO test using slide and
tube method, the result showed 2o% and 18%
seropositive for slide and tube method respectively.
