Abstract:
This study was carried out to screen whitish vaginal discharge
as indicator of vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) during pregnancy, it
is a source of great physical and psychological discomfort and
suffering. High Vaginal swabs (HVS) were collected from 100
pregnant women attending Rufa,a hospital in Elgazeera state
during the period from May to June 2012,
and subjected to
Gram’s stain, 10% KOH wet mount and culture.
Candida was isolated from 41% of all cultures. Out of the total
isolates, (78%) were C. albicans, while the remain (22%) were C.

Non
albicans.
Multigravidae
were
more
affected
than
primigravidae, and also non-educated women and third trimester
pregnancy.
Culture is ideal approach for the diagnosis of VVC, because it can
differentiate between yeast species which cause the infection,
and to give right treatment.
