Abstract:
This studyaims to investigate the effectiveness of implementing cooperative learning strategy for developing English language students' speaking skills. English language students face difficulties and hindrances when they start to speak in English, therefore, this study aims to help themovercome those problems. The research used the quantitative and qualitative methods of research for collecting the data of the study. The population of the study was drawn exclusively from the University teachers of English at Khartoum State and the students of second year in the English Department, College of Education, Sudan University of Science and Technology, 2014. The research instruments were a questionnaire which was distributed for the teachers of English and it is comprised of (50 copies) and a test which consisted of (50) students from both sexes. The data obtained by the questionnaire and the test was entered and processed by using SPSS program.The study results were;Firstly, Most of the teachers agreed that cooperative learning is successful learning strategy to be used for helping students develop speaking skills. Secondly, Second year University students can develop better speaking skills through cooperative learning strategy if they are trained to implement this strategy in the learning process. Thirdly, Students' performance is improved significantly and they developed better attitudes towards learning English via cooperative learning.
