Abstract:
A successive silica gel column chromatography followed by further purification via thin layer chromatography allowed for the isolation of two components – compounds I and II from Vangueria madagascariensis. Identification of these compounds was based on extensive UV shifting reagents, IR, 1HNMR and mass spectroscopy data. Compound I is a substituted flavonol, while compound II is a substituted flavanone.
In well diffusion method, the chloroform fraction of Vangueria madagascariensis, and compound II were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity.
The chloroform fraction of Vangueria madagascariensis did not show antibacterial activity, but it showed significant inhibitory activity against the fungi: Candida albicans and Aspergantillus niger. Compound II also showed antifungal activity.
