Abstract:
The discovery of antibiotic from microbial source has yielded impressive number of
compounds over the past 50 years. This study was carried out during the period
March 2011- June 2011, to isolate antibiotic producing-bacteria from soil. Soil
samples were collected in sterile plastic bag, then cultured by pouring plate technique
on nutrient agar enriched with soil extract. The overlay method was adopted to isolate
the antibiotic producer(s). Activity of antibiotic was evaluated aganist standard strains
and clinical bacterial isolates. The Result revealed that different promising bacteria
were isolated. Of the broad spectrum producers, one isolate was choosen and
subsequently identified as Bacillus subtilis. The product was found to be active
against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas species, and Salmonella species. in 5%
glucose concentration. It is concluded that -Sudanese soil teems with antibiotic
.producing bacteria and further investigations are required to validate this result
