Abstract:
The study was commenced in Nyala City-- Western Sudan to investigate the effect of the physiological status of Desert does on some haematological and biochemical parameters. The experimental animals were fifteen; ten of them were estrous synchronized using prostaglandin and were naturally mated; the rest were control group which are non pregnant and non lactating. Blood samples were collected during early and late stages of pregnancy, day of parturition and postpartum period. Conventional laboratory analytical methods were adopted for measurement of the selected parameters.
Significantly higher (P≤0.05) values of erythrocyte count (RBCs)
(13.56106cell/µl), packed cell volume (PCV)( 29.90 %), haemoglobin concentration (HB)( 10.47 g/dl), mean cell volume (MCV) ( 21.45 Fl) and mean cell haemoglobin (MCH) (7.37 pg) were found in the control group and the lowest values for the same parameters were observed during pregnancy and the day of parturition respectively. No significant (P≤0.05) variation was observed in RBCs and PCV during the postpartum period and the control group. But significantly (P≤0.05) lower values of Hb(8.82g/dl),MCV(19.94Fl) and MCH(6.72pg) were found during the postpartum period than that of the control group , the Rate (ESR)was significantly (P≤0.05)raised by pregnancy (1.08ml/H – 1.08ml/H) and parturition(2.40ml/H) . No significant variation was observed in ESR values between the control group(0.10ml/H) and the animals during the postpartum period (0.94ml/H).
In the day of parturition significantly (P≤0.05) higher values of total leukocytes count (10.20103cell/µl) and neutrophils (49.40 %) and significantly (P≤0.05) lower lymphocytes (49.60 % ) were registered than those observed during pregnancy and the postpartum period . Eosinophils and monocytes percentages did not vary significantly with the physiological status . During the late stage of pregnancy significantly (P≤0.05) lower values of total protein(5.09g/dl), globulin(1.29g/dl) and urea (29.91mg/dl)were observed than those of early stage of pregnancy. Creatinine values of the control group(0.53mg/dl),during the early stage of pregnancy(0.64mg/dl) and the post partum period(0.61mg/dl) were significantly (P≤0.05) lower than (2.09mg/dl) that registered during the late stage of pregnancy.
The highest values of glucose(75.37mg/dl) ,urea(45.76mg/dl) and the activities of ALT(36.60IU/L) and AST(95.10IU/L) were registered in the day of parturition. The serum albumin concentration did not vary significantly with the physiological status.
It is concluded that the physiological status modify the hematological picture and metabolism of desert does; so this should be taken into account for the management of these animals.
