Abstract:
Power grids in some provinces of Sudan are supplied with small diesel power plants. These diesel generators operate a few hours per day. They have higher fuel and transportation cost. Most of these generators are old and prone to mechanical failure. The solution to some of these problems is to use renewable energies, like wind or solar energy in remote areas. This manner of power generation does not require any supply of fossil fuels. Renewable energies are clean and do not produce emissions. Increased use of renewable energies will decrease fossil fuel consumption, protect our natural resources, and assist in decreasing global warming.
The goal of this research is to explain the possibility of electricity generation by wind energy in remote areas. Nyala territory is selected for the study of power generation by wind energy. The thesis shows the development of wind energy world-wide .The thesis describes the equipments of measuring wind velocity and other important parameters needed. Also this thesis describes the construction and types of wind turbines and their advantages and disadvantages. This thesis explains the technical principles of the wind kinetic energy, and how the wind energy converted to electrical energy, by different types of generators. In this thesis the complex calculation of the two parameters of Weibull Frequency Distribution (scale factor, shape factor) has been done with a computer program known as Alwin for Windows . Turbine types were selected. Calculation of the estimated yearly energy yield, and investment cost for Wind Park was carried-out. The thesis shows annual saving in cost for fuel and return-back investment cost period. Finally the thesis focuses on the prospect of electrical energy generation by wind in Nyala territory.
