Abstract: This study aims at studying the effect of English spelling system on the pronunciation of consonant sounds as pronounced by the students of the first year in the Sudanese secondary schools. The study consists of five chapters. The first chapter is a general framework of the study which is composed of an introduction to the study, its problem, questions, objectives and hypotheses. The study's importance and limits are also mentioned in the first chapter. In chapter two a survey of related literature and the previous studies in the field is given. In chapter three the writer describes the population, sample of the study and the method she used to test validity and suitability of the tools of her study. In chapter four the results of the study are presented , analyzed and discussed. In chapter five the writer gives a summary of the results of the study, some recommendations and suggestions for further studies.
