Abstract:
This study was conducted in Wad Madani Teaching Hospital in Gezira State during the
period from April to August 2013.
Objective: the main aim of the study is to assess the lipid profile among Renal
Transplanted Sudanese Patients under Immunosuppressant treatment in Gezira State.
Materials and methods: Eighty plasma samples were collected from renal transplanted
patients under immunosuppressant treatment. The test group was divided into two groups
according to the type of immunosuppressant drug , cyclosporine 30 subjects and
tacrolimus 50 subjects) from both sexes at different age .In addition to 50 plasma sample
from healthy people from both sexes at different age for comparison of total cholesterol,
triglyceride, high density lipoprotein and low density lipoprotein level. The level of lipid
profiles in the study was estimated by enzymatic method using spectrophotometer.
Results: the study showed significant increase in total cholesterol, triglyceride and low
density lipoprotein level in renal transplanted patients when compared with control
group. (157.3 ± 8.5 versus 124.2± 12.3 mg/dl, 152.2± 7.5 versus 92.7± 9.5 mg/dl, 61.2±
8.3 versus 50 ± 5.0 respectively), (p ≤0.05), with significant decrease in high density
lipoprotein (34.3 ± 4.5versus 42.4.± 4.1), (p ≤ 0.05). In contrast triglyceride, total
cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol is significantly increased in transplanted patients
treated with cyclosporine when compared with treated with tacrolimus (157.2 ± 14.6
versus 139.3 ± 13.1 mg/dl, 172.6± 11.4 mg/dl versus 153.9± 12.4 mg/dl, 68.0 ± 8.2
mg/dl versus 59.7±8.3 mg/dl respectively), (p ≤0.05), with significant decrease in HDL-
cholesterol level in transplanted patients treated with cyclosporine when compared with
treated with tacrolimus (30.7 ± 4.3 versus 36.5 ± 5.4 mg/dl )(p ≤0.05).The study
recorded insignificance correlation between lipid profile and both age and the duration of
the treatment in transplanted patients treated with both cyclosporine and tacrolimus (p ≥
0.05).
Conclusion: the study revealed significant increase in triglyceride, total cholesterol, and
LDL-cholesterol, with significant decrease in HDL-cholesterol level in transplanted
patients under immunosuppressant treatment, which is aggravated in patients treated with
cyclosporine than treated with tacrolimus.
