Abstract:
This was a hospital base and analytical study, to determine Hematological parameters among
Malnourished Children below 5 years.
Fifty Malnourished Children and twenty apparently healthy similar to study group served as a
controls group was used. Every participant informed about the study, excepted outcomes and
agreement of participation was obtained. A questionnaire was used to collected information
about Study group, age, sex, weight, height. Family number, interval between pregnancy
immunization, education and economical status of parents.
5ml of vinous blood was taken from the Study group, 2.5 ml in EDTA anticoagulant container
for CBC and 2.5ml in plain container for Serum iron and Serum ferritin.
Fully automated Sysmex Kx21N was used to determine CBC, and A25Biosystem was used for
serum iron and serum ferritin.
Computerize statistical package for social science (version 11.5) used for data processing.
Study group was divided according to sex, which males were 46% and females were 54%. Age
groups <18 month was (58%), 18-36 month was (34%) and >36 month was (8%). According to
type of malnutrition Marasmus was comprised 41%, Kwash 6% and Mrasmic-kwash was 3%.
Results showed that all malnourished children were anemic (100%). Mean value of hemoglobin
MCV, MCH, MCHC and hematocrit decreased significantly compared to control (P value
0.000), the means were 8.8, 72, 22.5, 30.9 and28.7 respectively.
WBCs and PLTS were significantly increased compared to control (p value 0.000); the mean
was 12 x103/ul and 570 x103/ul respectively.
Serum iron and serum ferritin was significantly decreased compared to control (p value 0.000);
the mean was 43.89 ug/dl and 17.882 ug/l respectively.
