dc.description.abstract This is a case control study conducted at Khartoum state during the period between March to August 2012. It was on hundred individuals, fifty of them were normal individuals and the other fifty were asthmatic patients. Sputum was collected, smeared fixed in absolute alcohol, and stained with May Grun Wald Giemsa Stain. Fifty out of the hundred involved individuals were males, the other fifty were females. Among case group 25 male were used; 10, 11, 4, showed acute, chronic, no inflammatory infiltrate respectively. However among 25 female; 12, 9, 4, showed acute, chronic, no inflammatory infiltrate respectively. Among the case group; 22(44%) of them showed acute inflammatory infiltrate, 20(40%) showed chronic inflammatory infiltrate and 8(16%) showed no inflammatory infiltrate. While among the control group 3 (6%) showed acute inflammatory infiltrate and 47 (94%) showed no inflammatory infiltrate. The present study concluded a significant relation between asthma and inflammatory infiltrate, the bronchial asthma is usually associated with increasing in inflammatory cell. (P. value 0.00) The present study showed no association between asthma and age of patients (p. value .099); gender (p. value .48) or smoking (p.value = o.15). No association between duration of asthma and cytomorphological changes in sputum smear (p. value = 0.70). en_US
