Abstract:
This is a case control study conducted at Khartoum state during the period between
March to August 2012. It was on hundred individuals, fifty of them were normal
individuals and the other fifty were asthmatic patients.
Sputum was collected, smeared fixed in absolute alcohol, and stained with May
Grun Wald Giemsa Stain.
Fifty out of the hundred involved individuals were males, the other fifty were
females.
Among case group 25 male were used; 10, 11, 4, showed acute, chronic, no
inflammatory infiltrate respectively.
However among 25 female; 12, 9, 4, showed acute, chronic, no inflammatory
infiltrate respectively.
Among the case group; 22(44%) of them showed acute inflammatory infiltrate,
20(40%) showed chronic inflammatory infiltrate and 8(16%) showed no
inflammatory infiltrate.
While among the control group 3 (6%) showed acute inflammatory infiltrate and
47 (94%) showed no inflammatory infiltrate.
The present study concluded a significant relation between asthma and
inflammatory infiltrate, the bronchial asthma is usually associated with increasing
in inflammatory cell. (P. value 0.00)
The present study showed no association between asthma and age of patients (p.
value .099); gender (p. value .48) or smoking (p.value = o.15).
No association between duration of asthma and cytomorphological changes in
sputum smear (p. value = 0.70).
