dc.description.abstract The study aims to discuss the role of stylistics in interpreting literature. This research analyses the problems of using Free Indirect Discourse as a narrative technique in Jane Austen’s novel Emma. The use of Free Indirect Discourse as stylistic device creates possibilities of tension amongst the characters of the novel and the readers. Due to the fact that the use of such narratives stylistic blends so well in terms of the subjectivity and objectivity consequently leads to misinterpretation ,from which point of view the story has been told. In order to conduct this study, some extracts drawn from the novel in question will be analyzed, to evaluate Austen’s usage of this Free Indirect Style. The research includes different opinions coming from different critics and scholars. The researcher recommendations for teachers and students are to be aware of the style of the language been used in the novel which shows how spoken and written language is used, to manipulate people in terms of perceptions, judgments and choices, moreover to demonstratehow Austen in particular interested in both the problem of evaluating others and the use of Free Indirect Discourse as a narrative style to address this problem. en_US
