Abstract:
This is cross- sectional analytic study done to describe the hippocampus among
Sudanese population using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
The aim of this study is to characterize hippocampus in MR images using
Texture analysis features which enabling features of tissues in different clinical
status in Sudanese population.
This study is attempt to study the hippocampus by using MRI special protocol
(T2 coronal 3mm slice thickness) and computerized textural analysis. The study
had been conducted in Royal Care International Hospital in a period from
February 2015 to December 2017 the sample include both gender 146
(50.3%were male) and 144 (49.7%were female) their ages between1-90 years
old, and all patients are examined in MRI department by Fillip MRI machine 1.5
tesla using head coil and brain protocol mainly coronal T2 with patients supine
position.
The main result reveals that the hippocampus volume for normal was bigger
than the volume of abnormal patients for both Left and right side of
hippocampus by relation significance .026&.024 respectively.
Normal right 2.207cm, normal left is 2.071 cm .for the abnormal right 2.134 cm
abnormal left 2.000 cm. No significant gender was recorded in the hippocampus
volume. Significant atrophy in the hippocampus volume with increasing age
were detected in main diseases. Main disease effect of hippocampus volume is
Epilepsy. And the correlate between patient’s age with different pathologies
shows that the patients between 51-75 years with higher number of pathology
atrophy, infract and tumors. The age group 51-75 was represented highest
percentage (37.7%)

The results of texture analysis give classification accuracy of hippocampus to
normal 77.8%, tumor 91.8%, infection 99.7%, while the epilepsy tissue showed
a classification accuracy 81.4%. The overall classification accuracy of temporal
bone area 83.1%.
The study conclude that normal right hippocampus value is more than the left
one, and there is no significant differences between males an and Females’
volume measurements for hippocampus to normal and abnormal patients the
volume for normal was bigger than the volume of abnormal patients for both
left and right side of hippocampus.
The study recommend that further studies in the hippocampus textural analysis
should be carried out and EEG for all patients as references and Hippocampus
volume should be measure by using software method to improve the accuracy
should be recommended.
