Extraction and Characterization of Curcumin from Turmeric and Using it as Color Coating Matrial for Metronidazole Tablets

Abstract

As it is known that curcumin has several medicinal characteristics, such as an antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti- inflammatory, and also has many benefits in cosmetics field. Several studies have been proposed to study the curcumin extraction from turmeric in a simple and easy way and to use it in several areas. However, applying curcumin in coating Metronidazole tablets curcumin pills has not been shown in the previous studies. At the present work, curcumin was extracted in higher yield and the obtained extract was characterized using infrared red (IR), thin layer chromatography (TLC). The obtained curcumin has a melting point(M.P) of 183°C,182°C and 184°C. The ash content found to be 1.5%, 3.09%, and 3.17% . Curcumin material was used in the pharmaceutical field as a colorful agent used in coating Metronidazole tablet curcmin pills. The experimental results showed that the coated Metronidazole tablets curcumin pills have no side effects. In addition it also showed stability of color and even at high temperature .and the coated tablets showed that the taste of bitterness ratio in Metronidazole pills wasa reduced or disappearanced completely.
