Investigating University Students’ Attitudes and Motivations towards English Language Learning

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the university students’ attitudes and motivation towards English language learning. The study is targeted third-year university students at English Language Department College of Education Sudan University of Science and Technology. The study examined the attitudes of the university students towards English language learning, and their motivation to study English. The research also aimed to find out whether the university students are completely aware of purposes of learning English language or not. Chapter one is an introduction, chapter two is a review of literature, which have been done in this field. Chapter three is research methodology, chapter four is data analysis, results and discussion, chapter five is conclusions, recommendations and suggestions for further studies. The findings are that the majority of university students have positive attitudes towards English language learning. Students need more motivation to learn English language fluently. Also the results show that majority of students are aware of purposes of learning English language. The study recommended that to enable the University students of English language to be successful, it is recommended to prepare him/her psychologically. Teachers should promote the students by increasing their motivation to continue learning English language.
