Eradication of Prosopis chilensis (mesquite), and the possibilities for Adoption of Substitutes by Local Communities in Gash Delta
(Kassala State)
The main objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of adoption of substitutes for Prosopis chilensis (mesquite) by local communities in Gash Delta (Kassala State) and recognize the views of local communities about mesquite and substitutes aiming to gain recognition of local communities in study area. The study investigated perception of land holders and livestock owners about mesquite and its substitutes. It explains, evaluates and compares between potential substitutes for mesquite. The data collection based on direct observations and use of questionnaire (structured interview), the sample represents 5% of the total households in the study area. The sample took from three village's clusters (Makali, wagar, and Matataib) which represent the study area geographically. The results of the study indicated that all respondents are with the eradication of mesquite and strongly supporting the adoption of the indigenous and some of exotic species like damas (Conocarpus lacifolu)
us), ban (Eucalyptus ssp), and neem (Azadirachta indica) as substitutes for mesquite. The study also indicates that the benefits of indigenous species outweigh the benefits of mesquite from economic, social, and environmental point of view and it reveals that mesquite caused many problems for human being, animal and agricultural land. The study area is now undergoing to mesquite eradication process by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The study indicated eradication of mesquite lies in areas between Gash River, and sand lands, should be delayed, until it is gradually being replaced by suitable species. The study showed that, the majority of people in the study area depend in their income on land for agricultural crops and they do not depend on mesquite products. Lack of women contribution in areas belongs to Hadandwa tribe due to negative attitudes of this tribe towards woman. |
