dc.description.abstract This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of teaching short stories in promoting secondary school students' writing narrative composition. The researcher has adopted empirical and descriptive methods. Two instruments has been used as primary tools for collecting data relevant to the study, namely questionnaire to teachers of English at various educational institutions and written pre-posttest to second year students in secondary school at Khartoum locality. The study sample of questionnaire comprises (104) teachers whereas the written pre-posttest composes (100) students. The researcher applied a Chi- squared Test to analyze and verify the hypotheses. The results have shown that Teaching short stories develop students’ brain storming in writing narrative composition. Moreover, teaching short stories in classrooms enables students to write good piece of narrative composition.Developing students' narrative composition requires teaching short stories inside the classroom. The study has recommended that EFL teacher should raise students' awareness about the importance of writing narrative composition. Furthermore , Teaching short stories should improve students' critical thinking in writing narrative composition. Teaching Short stories should help students visualize the actions of characters in writing narrative composition. Some suggestions are also proposed for further studies. en_US
