The Social Commitment and Realistic Features as Depicted in Gogol's Novel "The Overcoat

Abstract

The study aimed at investigating the social commitment and the realistic features as depicted throughout Nicolay Gogol's "the Overcoat". It also intended to justify the statement of the research which lies on the maltreatment of the protagonist by the upper class elite and the realistic features as represented in the way Akaky faced difficulty in buying a new coat and the extent to which he is badly humiliated. The researcher used the sociological and Marxist approach to analyze the statement of the research. The study hypotheses that this novel clarifies are the writer's commitment towards the individuals of the society and it also reflect realism throughout the events. The study found that the overall events of the story can be considered as a true reflection to the reality that everyone can feel in the world. It also found out that an author has roles in the manifestations of the way people live and in showing the reality about people. For the above findings, the study recommended the readers to dig deep in the Russian literature specially Gogol who is characterized by his realistic tendency.
