Applicationof Quality Management System in Construction Projects in Sudan

Abstract

The concept of quality management system is one of the modern management concepts, which aims to improve and develop the continuous performance to reach satisfaction of all the parties of the project. If the system is appropriately applied in the firms, it leads to the successful construction project, which fulfills the primary goal of the construction industry. This research aims to highlight the importance of implementing a quality management system in construction firms in Sudan because of its practical impact on the development of projects while reducing costs, time and effort. Moreover, aims to study the reality of quality management in the construction industry in Sudan and evaluate it to upgrade this sector to the best level and improve quality in construction projects to access satisfaction and competition to stay in the field. The systematic theoretical study was backed up by data from scientific books, references and field study of Interviews to some construction firm.To establish these facts and explore to which extent the research hypotheses are correct. Total of 120 questionnaire copies was distributed to varies firms working in different construction fields. The data was analyzed by Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to obtain the results of the study. The study established the following results which are: most of the construction firms not fully aware of quality management system concept, principles, and methods. Also, implementation of quality management has tangible effects regarding projects cost and time. Besides, it increases companies’ profits and minimizes losses and proved that customer satisfaction leads to company's stability. Moreover, there is an apparent negligence of monitoring of implementation projects by the government or the ministry of construction planning. The study found out the reasons of poor quality in construction projects and suggested some solutions that would avoid these problems and improve construction projects in Sudan. These results have proved the correctness of the study hypothesis.The research was concluded with some recommendations related to the effects which contribute to avoiding some of the problems of quality management in the construction industry. The most important suggestions are: all parties should know about the importance of the implementation quality management system. Also, all construction firms should be encouraged to implement quality management system techniques in the construction projects and should have quality department fully staffed.
