Abstract:
The present study was conducted to investigate the presence of PPR among sheep and
goats in Al-Hasaheisa slaughter house, Gezira State, Central Sudan during March 2019.
Ninety-nine pneumonic lung samples were collected from sheep (80) and goats (19) from
Al-Hasaheisa slaughter house, Gezira State, Central Sudan. A 20% lung tissue
homogenate was prepared from sheep and goat lung samples. All samples were screened
for the presence of PPRV antigen using the haemagglutination (HA) test. To achieve
highest haemagglutination titres, the HA test was performed using 0.8% chicken RBCs
suspension, PBS of pH 6.8 and the HA plates were incubated at 4°C for 16-17 minutes.
The results revealed that 86/99 samples were positive for PPRV antigen with an overall
antigenic prevalence of 86.9% whereas 13/99 (13.1%) samples were found negative.
Moreover, all goat samples (19/19, 100%) were found positive while 67/80 (83.7%) sheep
samples were found positive and 13/80 (16.3%) were found negative. Results indicated
that the heamagglutination titres achieved ranged from 2 to 256 HAU with mean titre of
17. Two (2.0%) samples achieved the highest HA titre of 256 HAU and 2 (2.0%) samples
achieved the highest HA titre of 128 HAU. Apparently most of the samples 29 (29.3%)
achieved titre of 8 HAU.
Within goats, HA results revealed heamagglutination titres ranged from 2 to 256 HAU
with mean titre of 22.7. One sample only (5.3%) achieved the highest HA titre of 256
HAU. Of note, most samples (7, 36.8%) achieved titre of 4 HAU. Within sheep, HA
results revealed heamagglutination titres ranged from 2 to 256 HAU with mean titre of
15.6. One sample only (1.2%) achieved the highest HA titre of 256 HAU and 2 (2.5%)
samples achieved the highest HA titre of 128 HAU. Of note, most samples (25, 31.3%)
achieved titre of 8 HAU.
The findings indicated the presence of PPR among sheep and goats in Al-Hasaheisa,
Gezira State. The high prevalence value achieved indicated the wide exposure of these
animals to PPRV
