Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of Arabic as a mother tongue on
English pronunciation of 3rd level students at the college of languages- Sudan
University of science &Technology. Descriptive and analytical methods have been
used as well as a test and a questionnaire. The study sample has been drawn from
(20) 3rd level students .As for the questionnaire as many teachers have expressed
their opinion on the questionnaire’s statements. The study has come up with the
following results: English language is complicated because orthography does not
reflect the pronunciation. University syllabus does not sufficiently demonstrate
pronunciation drills and exercises, not to mention students’ lack of basic
knowledge of sound system of English phonetics and phonology. The study has
recommended that: College of Languages should intervene to introduce the properremedy for the issue in question. Solve this problem by adding syllabus which
covers pronunciation drills and exercises. The student should be aware to the
basics knowledge of sound system of English Phonetics and Phonology in
contrastive manner. In addition the researcher made some suggestions for further
future studies.
