Abstract:
This is retrospective study conducted in Omdurman Friendship Hospital
in Khartoum state, during the period from May to July 2012.The
objective of this study is to investigate patients who developed amyloidal
and calcium deposition associated with thyroid lesions.
Fifty paraffin embedded tissue blocks previously diagnosed as thyroid
lesions were selected. The patient's information was collected from the
archived files of patients. The patient's ages ranged between 20 - 80 years
with mean age 50 years.
Tissue sections were stained using Vonkossa and Congored technique for
histochemical method for detection Calcium and Amyloid respectively.
The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS computer program.
Out of 50 patients with thyroid lesions 42(84%) were females while
8(16%) were males.Amyloid gave positive result in 3(6%) all of them
females, but calcium gave positive result in 12(24%) females and 3(6%)
males.
histopathological diagnosis was 42 degenerative goiters and 8
hyperplastic goiters. Amyloid gave positive result in 3 all of them
degenerative goiters. Calcium gave positive result in 14 degenerative
goiters and only one case of hyper plastic goiter.
The study conducted that the deposition of Amyloid and Calcium are
found in goiters regardless to the patient's ages and sex
The study recommended that investigation of thyroid patients for
amyloid and calcium is important for better diagnosis of patients.
