Abstract:
This study has dealt with the problem that faced some Sudanese University students during translating pragmatic aspects. Specifically; speech acts, structure and real world expressions. The study aims at investigating students’ knowledge of pragmatic skills such as how to deal with dimension of pragmatics, account for the differences between English and Arabic languages and tackle translation effectively. The significance of this study arises from the fact that it tries to find out the reasons behind the difficulties that face students during translating pragmatic aspects and suggest some solutions which may help them to understand and translate pragmatic aspects properly.
This study adopted the descriptive method combined with quantitative analysis. The population of the study is 4th year students, semester eight, Collage of Languages, English department, Sudan University of Science and Technology. One tool was used for data collection which was a test for forty students.
The most important result which the study came up with is that: the majority of the students involved in the study were unable to find the correct answers of the test questions. Therefore, the researcher recommends the importance of teaching pragmatics to students at university level in the department of English language.
