dc.description.abstractPrevious investigators experimentally studied the endurance of a bearing with under-cut inner and outer rings, and concluded that under-cutting is favorable. In this research, I postulated that manufacturing companies are reluctant to adding a new groove in the rings. The market does not accept this because it is a new bearing with different specifications and a higher price for customers. Thus, it is suggested to make this groove on the shaft. The goal of this research is to study the effect of under-cutting the shaft fitted to the deep groove ball bearing on the stress patterns within the inner ring at the area where the ring first touches the shaft. The finite element method used was based on 8-node isoperimetric elements for discretization of the continuum. These elements were also used to construct the mesh. The finite element equations were solved using a FORTRAN program. The stress contour within the inner ring cross-section was plotted for the standard bearing shaft and under-cut shaft. The plot showed that under-cutting induces high compressive stresses at the area where the ring first touches the shaft and that the stresses differ from the case of the standard shaft without under-cutting.en_US
