Abstract: The objectives of this study are to analyse and identify the problems that are liable to face teachers of English as a university requirement at tertiary level in the capital Khartoum and explain the reasons which caused these problems . Also this study aims to find whether all the teachers of English as a university requirement are qualified to teach such a subject and to receive training so as to ensure a good standards of teaching . The first chapter is allocated for the research plan .It consists of the introduction , the research problem , the aims of the research , the questions , the main hypothesis and the significance of the study . Chapter two is a review of literature . It consists of two parts . Part one deals with the historical background of teaching English in the Sudan and review of literature related to teaching English as a foreign language while the second part deals with the previous studies . Chapter three outlines the methodology that has been used in the study so as to achieve the set of aims and objectives . It describes the procedures followed to elicit the required information .Three instruments for data collection are used . They are : two questionnaires , one for the teachers and the other for the students and an Aptitude Test for the students . It also describes data collection techniques , reliability and validity of the study . Chapter four reports the results and the discussions of the data obtained through the ( teachers' questionnaire , Students' questionnaire and an Aptitude test for the students ) analyzed , tabulated and discussed . The fifth chapter is devoted to the main findings , recommendations and suggestions for further studies . The main findings of the study are : 1- The aims and objectives of teaching English as a university requirement are not very well defined . 2- The majority of the English language teachers as a university requirement at tertiary level in the capital Khartoum are not qualified and even two of them are not specialized to teach English as a major . 3- Most of the syllabuses which are designed to teach English as a university requirement are not sufficient and not suitable to teach such a subject . 4- Students are not fully aware of why they are learning English as a university requirement . 5- English language teachers are facing many problems : class size , timetabling , lack of materials , lack of a clear administrative status and lack of teacher training
