The new generation of mobile telecommunication introduces a new age in multimedia services. Mobile positioning is an important feature of GSM radio networks and plays a significant role in the current research. Knowledge of exact location of user provides firstly safety but also great market opportunities for commerce applications. The objective of the research is to propose the most applicable positioning technique that provides satisfactory accuracy and availability, to be deployed in the GSM existing networks. This research considers various available positioning technologies for users of the GSM networks. Detailed analysis is concentrated in hybrid Cell ID and Time Advance (TA) positioning method, which is chosen due to its applicability, availability and satisfying accuracy. The performance of the proposed positioning methods is assessed through simulations and field measurements. The real measurements are taken from MTN Sudan mobile network (GSM network); these reading are applies to system simulation to measure performance for proposed method. The research result presented in this thesis show the accuracy of mobile’s location vary between 75m to 175m,so it is classify as a good result for most of location based services like knowing the location of general places (Hotels, Markets, and Airports).en_US
