It is intended to improve the standard of the learners of English at the Sudanese secondary schools with reference to the present hazy state of literature teaching at the Sudanese secondary schools. In addition, empirical work was done at a secondary school regarding the effect of literature in developing students language proficiency. Through the implemented research tools of questionnaire and fieldwork, the study has revealed that the inclusion of literature in the English language curriculum: 1. is an important tool that helps fostering language awareness in general and is recommended by almost all teachers of English. 2. helps in developing language awareness in all features especially the peripheral awareness of the English structures and the enrichment of the vocabulary stock in the learners. 3. presents the secondary school pupils with an input that makes literature teaching an excellent source of knowledge and fun as regards different features of the language. 4.
