Accuracy of ERCP & U/S in Obstructive Jaundice Comparative Study

Abstract

The biliary system disorders are fairly common through the world, in this study I select 50 patient with obstructive jaundice. The objective of this study is to evaluate the sensitivety of ERCP and U/S in obstructive Jaundice. Also to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each procedures. The study was been carried out in IBN SINA teaching hospital. It was been done on 50 obstructive Jaundiced patient by ERCP and U/S. The obstruction is usually due to a large single stone or masses or external compression of the main bile ducts. The U/S is superior in diagnosing obstructive Jaundice caused by stones (60%) while ERCP is (50%) and due to tumors U/S is (22%) while ERCP is (16%) and due to other pathologies U/S is (8%) while ERCP is (4%). So practically the U/S accuracy is (90%) and ERCP is (70%). However U/S, regarding these results is proved to be superior to ERCP and hence it considered as a technique of choice for diagnosing the obstructive Jaundice. ERCP is useful in diagnosis when the biliary ducts are not dilated and when there is no obstruction at the ampulla. Expert sonologists and advanced recent U/S machines are recommended in order to achieve nearly (100%) accuracy and ERCP is left for interventional purposes.
