Abstract

This study aimed at the assessment of the training needs of Elseliet agricultural scheme farmer's for irrigation management of abut (70) forage. It includes studying the levels of knowledge, skills and attitudes of farmers at present and compares it with the desired levels of knowledge, skills and attitudes to be developed in the farmers. A sample of (90) forage farmers were selected randomly form the southern part of Elseliet scheme. Descriptive statistics frequencies & percentages are used for analyzing the data. A model of scaling training needs of the four levels designed by the researcher based on Roger 83 adaptors categories. The main findings of the study are: 1. There is a gap between the desired knowledge and skills at varying levels. 2. There is positive attitude towards efficient usage of irrigation water but the practices is contradicting the positive attitude. 3. There is positive attitude towards adoption of improving surface irrigation practices 4. The main reason for the losses of irrigation water is caused by the poor land leveling. Recommendations: The Ministry of Agriculture, livestock and irrigation Khartoum state is to: 1. Provide demonstration sites to demonstrate improved surface irrigation practices. 2. Encourage application of application of the recommended extension package for improving surface irrigation which are developed by the researcher explained in the study. 3. Introduce and encourage application of application of lazer leveling techniques in Elseliet and other similar schemes at reduced prices. To the schemes administration to: 1. Advice farmers to establish " Seven Jewels " form Abu VI into the '' Hawasha '' to facilitate irrigation of high level areas. 2. Be responsible for cleaning Abu XX under their responsibility and to insure that the whole Abu XX is cleaned at the same time. 3. Encouraging farmers to adopt improving surface irrigation techniques by reducing water rate prices for the adaptors as they adopt as drip irrigation the scheme
