A cross-sectional hospital based study conducted during the period from october 2008 to october 2010, compared the plasma levels of total bilirubin, conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin, AST, ALT, ALP, total protein, albumin, creatinine , and crea􀆟nine clearance of 101 Sudanese patients with dengue fever and dengue haemorrhgaic shock syndrome (as a test group) and 50 apparently healthy volunteers (as a control group). Participants in this study were from different hospitals in port Sudan, Sudan. Age and gender of the test group were matched with the control group. The plasma levels of total protein, albumin, AST, ALT, and ALP were measured using commercial kits from Biosystem Company, while the plasma levels of total bilirubin, conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin, creatinine, and creatinine clearance were measured using commercial kits from Human Company. All biochemical tests were done using a spectrophotometer from Biosystem Company. In patients with dengue infection; the plasma levels of total bilirubin, conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin, AST, ALT, and creatinine were raised, ALP, total protein, and albumin were not significantly changed, whereas creatinine clearance were significantly reduced when compared to the control group. In patients with dengue shock syndrome; the plasma levels of total bilirubin, conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin, AST, ALT, and creatinine were significantly raised, ALP were not significantly changed, whereas plasma total protein, albumin, and creatinine clearance were significantly reduced when compared to those with dengue fever. The test group, showed insignificant weak negative correlations between creatinine clearance and the plasma levels of total bilirubin, conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin, AST, and ALT. From this study, it is concluded that; in Sudanese patients with dengue fever and dengue shock syndrome there is impairment of both renal and liver function, this impairment is more sever in those with dengue shock syndrome.en_US
