This study conducted during the period September 2010, compared serum levels of March to Alanine transaminase, To study the effect of diabetes mellitus on the serum activity of ALT, of 60 diabetic patients, chosen from diabetic center, Khartoum North. And hag Elssafi hospital, ( in Khartoum state) and 20 apparently, health individuals as controls. Patients with diabetes mellitus had significantly higher serum ALT levels, as measured by spectrophotometric method. The main serum ALT was 25.7(SD 7.9)u/l, in the diabetic group, compared to 17.9 (SD5.7)u/l in the control group (p<0.05).but the increased ALT were within the normal reference value. To study the effect of the duration of diabetes mellitus on serum levels of the liver enzyme. Alanine transaminase (ALT), the diabetic group of patient (n=60) was divided into two subgroups; <10 years duration of the disease (n=27) and > 10 years duration (n=33). It was found that, serum ALT, they show significant increase with increase duration of the disease. But still any alteration of activity were within the normal value The following result was obtained. The mean serum ALT levels (<10 years: 22.5±8.1u/l and > 10 years:28.3±6.8 u/l p<0.05). To study the effect of age with diabetes mellitus on serum levels of Alanine transaminase (ALT), the diabetic group of patient (n=60) was divided into two subgroups; <40 years (n=9) and > 40 years duration (n=51). It was found that, serum ALT, although they were significantly raised in the diabetes group (n=60), they don't show any significant increase with increase of age. The following result was obtained. The mean serum ALT levels (<40 years: 24.9±9.4 u/l and > 40 years:25.8.0±7.7 u/l p>0..05) To study the effect of sex with diabetes mellitus on serum levels of Alanine transaminase (ALT), the diabetic group of patient (n=60) was divided into two subgroups; male (n=39) and female (n=21). It was found that, serum ALT, although they were significantly raised in the diabetes group (n=60), they don't show any significant increase with sex. The following result was obtained. The mean serum ALT levels (male: p>0.05)en_US
