A cross sectional study conducted in Khartoum state during the period from March to December 2011, compared the serum levels of Magnesium and Urate of 67 diabetic patients as a test group, and a 33 apparently healthy individuals as a control group. Age and Gender were matched between the study group and the Control Group. Serum Magnesium and Urate were determined using spectrophotometer and kits from Biosystem Company. The serum levels of Magnesium were significantly reduced (p < 0.05) when compared with the control group (non-diabetic), whereas the serum levels of Urate were significantly Raised. The data was analyzed using SPSS computer program. There was no correlation of statistical difference between the Body Mass Index and the serum levels of Magnesium and no correlation between the Body Mass Index and the serum levels of Urate. There was a weak positive correlation between the duration of diabetes and the serum levels of magnesium and a positive correlation between the duration of diabetes and the serum levels of Urate. Also there was no correlation between the serum levels of Urate and serum levels of Magnesium. In conclusion: The serum levels of Magnesium are reduced in diabetic patients with type 2 whereas that of Urate is raised. The serum levels of Magnesium have positive correlation with the duration of diabetes, as well as the serum levels of Urate have a positive correlation with the duration of the disease. The serum levels of Magnesium have no correlation with the Body Mass Index (BMI); neither the serum levels of Urate have a correlation with the BMI.en_US
