The aim of the present study was to assess the activity of ciprofloxacin against bacteria isolated from urinary tract infections (UTIs). The rationale for this approach is based on the highly predictable spectrum of etiologic agents causing UTIs and their antimicrobial resistance patterns. It observed that there is an increase resistance to Ciprofloxacin, the current drug of choice for treatment of UTIs. The work conducted at Wad Medaniin the period from September to October 2013. One hundred and twenty nine (n=129) urine specimens were collected. The sensitivity of ciprofloxacin in specimens of males was 16 (59.3%), and the resistance was 11 (40.7%). The sensitivity in females was 51(50.0%) while resistance was 51 (50.0%). The activity of Ciprofloxacin on each isolated bacteria was as follows: 24 (52.2) of Escherichia coli were sensitive, 22 (47.8) was resistance, Co-aggulase negative Staphylococcus (CoNS.) sensitivity was 20 (52.6%) resistance was 18 (47.4%), S.aureus sensitivity was 6 (60.0%,) resistance was 4 (40.0%), Strepto spp. sensitivity was 5 (71.4%), resistance was 2 (28.6%), Streptococcus pyogenes sensitive 2 (66.7%), resistance 1 (33.3%), Klebsiella spp. Sensitivity 5 (45.5%), resistance 6 (54.5%), Pseudomonas spp. sensitivity was 3 (75.0%), resistance was 1 (25.0%), Proteus vulgaris sensitivity 0%, resistance (100.0%), Coliform sensitive 5 (62.5%), resistance 3 (37.5%).en_US
