Abstract: Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae have been increasingly recognized in the hospital settings throughout the world. This study was carried out in the Research Laboratory Sudan University of Science and technology during the period from September 2009 to May 2010. The study is aim to detect blaTEM, blaSHV, and blaCTX-M genes in Klebsiella pneumoniae which were isolated from patients with community acquired urinary tract infection. Strains of K. penumoniae were obtained from the Research Laboratory. All strains were checked for purity by sub-culturing on nutrient agar and examined microscopically. Bacterial DNA was extracted from each isolate using boiling method. Multiplex PCR was adopted to detect these genes. The result revealed the presence of bla SHV in five isolates. It’s concluded that the SHV gene is a common in K. penumoniae. Further studies, with large number of isolates are required to validate this result.
