| Abstract: | This study was conducted at the experimental farm of the College of Agricultural Studies, Sudan University of Sciences and Technology at Shambat with the objective of evaluating the impact of using different organic fertilizers(Compost Elshomokh, Compost Alkhaseeb, Compost Elkhyrat and Liquid Organic Fertilizer (Osarat Eltabya)) on growth, yield and quality of onion (Baftaim-s cultivar) during the two winter seasons of 2010/2011 and 2011/2012.The studied growth and yield parameters were leaves number per plant, leaf length, bulb diameter, bulb TSS and bulb yield per hectare. Results showed that plants treated with organic fertilizers were superior in leaves number per plant compared to the control in both seasons. Compost Elshomokh gave the highest number of leaves per plant in season one (12 leaves per plant) and season two (11 leaves per plant).Application of organic fertilizers positively affected leaf length. Compost Alkhaseeb recorded the highest leaf length in season one and compost Elshomokh in season two. Addition of organic fertilizers increased bulb diameter. High percent of medium diameter bulbs were obtained from compost Elshomokh in season one and compost Alkhaseeb in season two. The results showed that there were significant differences in bulb TSS Compost Alkhaseeb (15.0%) and compost Elshomokh (14.4%) behaved similarly and were superior to Control (13.6%), Compost Elkhyrat (13.4%) and Osarat Eltabya (13.1%) in season one. Results showed that there were no significant differences in bulb TSS among the Organic Fertilizers tested but they were significantly higher than the control. There were no significant differences in bulb yield between Compost Elshomokh (19.4t/ha), Osarat Eltabya (15.7t/ha) and compost Alkhaseeb(15.2 t/ha). The three fertilizers significantly produced yield higher than Elkhayrat (11.5t/ha) and the control (11.2t/ha) in season one. Results of season two showed no significant differences between organic fertilizers in bulb yield and they significantly our yielded the control. |
