Cytological Changes of Oral Mucosa in Cigarettes Smokers in Khartoum state

Abstract

This districtive study was conducted in Khartoum state duringthe period from November 2008 to march 2009. The study aimed to assess the cytological changes in oral mucosa in the cigarettes smokers using the conventional stain papa nicolaou stain. In this study 50 sample from male cigarettes smokers were collected as study group, the duration of smoking was 15 years or more and the number of cigarettes smoked was 10 or more cigarettes per day, and without oral lesion and previous history of oral diseases, their ages ranged between 30-55 years. And 50 samples of oral mucosa from non smokers in whom other occupation factors were excluded as control. Smears were prepared, fixed, and stained by papa nicoloau stain then examined under microscope. The cytological assessment revealed the following finding : Inflammatory infiltrate was detected in 13 (26%) individual from smokers group Oral epithelial atypia was observed in 31(62%) individual with significance correlation to duration of the smoking and number of cigarettes per day (p-value <0.05) .And no oral atypia detected among control No malignant cells were detected among the study group or the control.
