FREQUENCY OF IRON DEFICIENCY ANAEMIA AMONG ANAEMIC PATIENTS ATTENDING KHARTOUM HOSPITAL

Abstract

This descriptive study was conducted to determine the incidence of iron deficiency anaemia in 100 patients with low Hb attending KTH from October 2008 to March, 2009. The blood samples were collected from such patients before iron treatment and tested for complete haemogram (automated method) to find out the haemoglobin (HB) concentration, packed cells volume (PCV),red cells count (RBC),and red cell indices, as well as a well prepared well stained blood films were studied to evaluate the abnormal morphology of cells. Thereafter, the serums were tested for iron profile to measure iron, ferritin level and total iron binding capacity value. Results of the study showed that The majority of patients showed reduction in Hb, PCV, and RBCs count, MCV, MCH and MCHC. But the iron deficiency anaemia among the study population was low from our suspected cases. The iron profile show variable results in our expected IDA cases due to other chronic diseases. Most patients were suffered from Malaria, dysentery, typhoid and haemorrhage and other inflammation that give high ferritin level. There was a significant correlation between CBC result and female serum ferritin in addition to TIBC results. Also there was in significant relation ship between results of CBC and the serum iron and male serum ferritin values.
